Personal Qualities of a Health Care Worker: Part I
Our health science teachers often talk about the need for more content regarding the personal qualities of a health care worker. What do I think? I think way more people than just health care workers need some lessons on personal qualities. Along those lines, my niece and I just had this back-and-forth on Facebook yesterday...
My point? Some personal qualities that we "old folks" may have taken for granted in the past, are not necessarily being taught to and practiced by recent generations of graduates entering the workforce. Therefore, it is no surprise that teachers are looking for content and lesson plans on personal qualities of a health care worker.
Just so happens...we have Personal Qualities of a Health Care Worker content
Yeah, we got that! We have a three-unit personal qualities of a health care worker module that covers personal characteristics, the health care team, and personal management skills. Earlier this week, I shared some lesson plans content for Web research skills. I guess it's only fair that I offer up some lesson plans for our health science audience as well. (Although, I think both Web research AND personal qualities are content areas that EVERYONE should get!) So, here's Part I: Personal Characteristics.
Personal Characteristics
Personal characteristics includes both appearance and desirable traits.
Presenting a pleasant appearance, clean, well-fitting clothing and good grooming, increases both your personal confidence and patient confidence in your abilities. Good health is also critical and includes good nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, good posture, and avoiding harmful substances.
Health care workers must take special care to abide by the rules and to maintain a neat appearance. The requirements for dress vary by facility, but there are basic guidelines that all health care workers should follow including uniforms, regular clothing if permitted, and clean and supportive footwear. Other restriction may include jewelry and wearing a name badge.
Personal hygiene is important for everyone. Health care workers may come in close physical contact with patients, so observing good hygiene practices is particularly important. Preventing body odor, keeping your teeth well-brushed, hair well-groomed, and keeping fingernails clean are a few critical hygiene issues that health care workers must be aware of.
Desirable traits for health care workers include these general mind-sets:
- Maintaining a positive attitude
- Following the rules
- Communicating effectively
- Interacting appropriately
- Growing personally and professionally
