Looking for resources to help students meet the required and graded components of the Foundational SAE?  Learn how iCEV has aligned its instructional materials to meet each of these requirements.  From in-depth career exploration of all agriculture pathways to formulas for career success to financial literacy applications to workplace safety, media-rich lessons accompanied by application projects and activities satisfy each component.  The “Agricultural Literacy” component pairs nicely with the nine industry-recognized certifications tested for on iCEV, providing students with a transition plan to one or more Immersion SAEs.

Goal Setting Basics*

Setting a goal can be a confusing process for some students, but using the SMART acronym can help students in the goal-setting process. This presentation will explain the difference between goals and objectives, short-term and long-term goals and personal versus business goals.

 
Formulas for Career Success: Career Testing & Investigation*

Discovering what to do for a career can be challenging and overwhelming. This presentation presents factors that affect career decisions, such as personal interest and skills, work-life balance and job outlook. The benefits and methods of self-assessment are also explored, as well as ways to further investigate career fields of interest.

 
Career Cluster Interest Inventory

The Career Cluster Interest Inventory is designed to help students determine which Career Cluster and corresponding endorsement area best fits their interests and skills.

Step 1: Provide an overview of the Career Clusters. Show slides 3 to 6. 

Step 2: Explain how survey is structed and how to analyze results. Show slides 8 to 12.

Step 3: Complete the Career Cluster Interest Inventory Survey.  

Step 4: Watch applicable Exploring Careers lessons (i.e., top clusters from the survey results) and complete the corresponding projects and activities.

 

iCEV has an Exploring Careers lesson for each of the 16 Career Clusters.  Each lesson provides the following:

  • Video content providing an overview of the cluster, along with exploration of careers found within each cluster pathway
  • Career Exploration Journal Projects which serve as way for students to create a potential career plan for a career of interest within the cluster.

  • Career Connections segments featuring career interviews with individuals across the United States with careers within the cluster, along with a Career Interview Activity designed to help students determine level of interest for that specific career. 
Cost of Education & Training* This presentation explores the cost and financing options which go along with attending a post-secondary education institute. Levels of education, educational aspects, funding options and repayment methods are described.
Formulas for Career Success: Financial Aid* Many students need financial aid in order to attend institutions of higher learning, but not everyone understands the various types of financial aid available. This presentation analyzes the costs associated with higher learning and describes financial aid opportunities, such as grants, scholarships, student loans and work-study programs. The process of applying for financial aid is also outlined.
Formulas for Career Success: Higher Learning* Higher learning is an important part of building a career. Types of higher learning institutions, degrees and opportunities are explored. Factors which influence higher learning decisions are analyzed and requirements for admission to higher learning institutions are presented. In addition, the presentation provides information concerning opportunities to earn college credit while in high school.
Formulas for Career Success: Job Search* Getting a job can be a difficult and time consuming process. This presentation provides students with a summary of the job search process, outlining methods of discovering job opportunities and the benefits of gaining employment early in life.

The résumé is the most basic and necessary of career-building tools, so it is vital for students to develop an effective one. This presentation guides students through the process of developing a résumé. It discusses information to be included, appropriate formatting and how to deliver a résumé to a potential employer.

Cover letters are often essential when seeking jobs. This presentation discusses the goal of a cover letter and how cover letters can be beneficial. The components and format of cover letters are analyzed and tips for writing cover letters are provided.

A career portfolio is a valuable, in-depth tool used to communicate an individual’s abilities, strengths and accomplishments. This presentation explores the items commonly found in career portfolios and explains the purpose and benefits of having a career portfolio. The interview process can be stressful, but preparation can help to ease the pressure. This presentation explains the importance of preparation and practice and guides students through preparation strategies. The need to research the company and position are discussed. In addition, common interview questions are revealed and analyzed.

The interview is arguably the most important part of the application process, and it can be nerve-wracking for those who are unfamiliar with it. This presentation guides students through the process of a typical job interview. Various methods of interviewing are identified, and tips regarding classical “do”s and “don’t”s are provided. In addition, the presentation includes an example of a poor interview performance and an impressive interview performance.

 
Formulas for Career Success: After the Interview* The application and interview processes could end with rejection or a new job. Either way, being prepared for the outcome is important. This presentation reassures students who have been rejected after an interview and gives students offered a job tips for starting the job on the right foot. Types of compensation are described and new employee paperwork is discussed.
Employability Skills* This presentation is designed to help students understand what it means to be an effective and successful employee. Professionalism, effective communication, ethical behavior, academic preparation, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, leadership, time management, knowledge of technology and stress management skills are detailed in this presentation as well as examples of each. This presentation also highlights the importance of professionalism and having a positive work ethic in the business world.
Leadership & Team Dynamics*

This presentation discusses leadership, leadership styles and the process of being a good leader. Teamwork, team building and personality types for team development is also discussed.

 
Workplace Technology* Current and emerging technologies influence business practices. This presentation analyzes how technology is used in the workplace and discusses benefits, risks and ethical concerns related to use of technology in the workplace. Additionally, various types of workplace technology are described, including copiers and fax machines, business phone systems, computers and computer software, networks, the Internet and Internet applications.
Electronic Communications & Scheduling* This presentation defines electronic communication and electronic scheduling, identifies different electronic communication and scheduling systems and demonstrates how to use various electronic and scheduling systems.

Budgeting is the process of creating a plan to spend money. It allows people to determine, in advance, whether they will have enough money for their needs and wants. This presentation teaches students to identify current financial situation; investigate individual’s money personalities; develop short-, medium and long-term goals; separate need from wants and examine budgets which incorporates their financial goals.

Saving & Investment Strategies** Savings and investments help diminish financial worries and makes money work. This presentation identifies reasons for saving and investing, evaluates cost and benefits of various savings options, evaluates risk and return of various investment options, provides a plan for saving and investing, analyzes the relationship between risk and return, and interprets the role of goal setting in saving and investing.
Financial Statements & Record-keeping** This presentation provides proper methods of interpreting and reconciling bank statements, gives ideas on maintaining financial records, investigates ways to construct a balance sheet and evaluates personal and family financial documents.
Understanding Personal Taxes** This presentation defines personal taxes, analyzes the importance of taxes, interprets tax liabilities and related forms, explains tax returns and related forms, describes tax brackets, examines the consequences of failing to pay tax and investigates tax breaks, including deductions, credits and exemptions.

Life cycle planning and the aspects of personal risk management are explored in this presentation, as well as the effects of demographic, cultural, societal and economic factors on families. Students also will discover the importance of a reliable financial plan when faced with a crisis.
Personal Risk Management** This presentation identifies risk management strategies, including avoiding, reducing, retaining and transferring; evaluates various types of insurance, such as auto, health, life and property insurance; examines types of identity theft situations and scams and how to develop a plan to protect oneself from identity theft.
Retirement & Estate Planning** Both retirement and estate planning require careful management and arrangement. This presentation identifies costs of retirement such as living expenses and health care expenses, explains sources of income during retirement such as Social Security and employer-sponsored plans as well as providing details of estate planning such as wills, trusts and medical directives.
Home-Buying Basics: Understanding the Language** Home-buying is a complex process involving a unique set of terms and concepts. This presentation guides students through the language used when buying a home. Equity, appreciation and depreciation are explained, as well as types of mortgages and typical mortgage structure. In addition, common components of a home purchase agreement are discussed.

This presentation provides students a step-by-step guide to homeownership. The benefits and drawbacks of homeownership are compared to those of renting and factors to consider when making the decision to purchase a home are discussed. In addition, the processes involved in the purchase are examined, including hiring a lender and agent, getting pre-approved, house hunting, making an offer and closing.
Car-Buying Basics** Buying a car can be an overwhelming process to those who are unfamiliar with it. This presentation provides students a step-by-step guide to car buying. Topics discussed include: types of vehicles, transportation needs to consider, how to calculate a budget, sources of valuable vehicle information, how to examine and test-drive a vehicle and strategies for negotiation. In addition, leasing is explained as well as advantages and disadvantages of leasing versus buying are described.

A4. Workplace Safety

Scientific Procedures & Safety

This presentation introduces the steps of the scientific method, as well as demonstrates the importance of safety in the science lab. The history of major discoveries and inventions attributed to science are also explored. Throughout this production, students will gain an understanding of developments made through science, as well as the limitations it encompasses. Agricultural and food scientists discuss various issues impacting future research.

 
Basic Shop Safety Through the combination of live action and section assessments, this presentation emphasizes the importance of wearing personal protective equipment; safety precautions to follow to prevent fire, chemical and electrical hazards; and emergency guidelines, including first aid steps and procedures. This is a MUST for anyone working in a shop environment.
Welding Shop Safety When preparing to work in any welding shop, it is important for both students and instructors to be familiar with hazards and safety precautions in the shop. This production will address all aspects of shop safety, from the causes of the most common accidents in the shop to material handling safety to personal protective equipment.
Food Industry Safety

Without safe and healthful practices, the food industry can cause many injuries and illnesses. Therefore it is extremely important for members of the food industry to understand food and workplace safety. This presentation will allow students to learn about and analyze regulations, systems and practices which promote safety in the food industry.

Environmental Issues: Animal Systems Many opinions have been formed about the impact agriculture has on the environment. This DVD describes and explains the truth about the livestock industry’s effect on global warming and the greenhouse effect. Additional topics include deforestation, water pollution issues, animal welfare and the effects of meat processing on the environment. Various environmentally friendly techniques and safety practices are also discussed.
Web Ethics & Safety The Internet has become an important tool in everyday life. While enjoying the convenience of the Internet, one should also be aware of the ethical and safety issues online. This presentation discusses the potential dangers and hazards of the Internet and provides skills to prevent and respond to these issues.

Personal & Occupational Health & Safety In this lesson students will review the general safety and health policies and procedures on the job site. This lesson reviews rules and regulations, job site safety, personal protection equipment, as well as emergency preparedness.

The World of Agriculture

Agriculture is a large part of the world’s economy and everyday life. This presentation provides a general knowledge of all aspects of agriculture and its importance. Throughout this presentation students will learn about the agricultural pathways, issues within agriculture, trends and technology in agriculture, educational opportunities and global agriculture.

 
Government's Role in Agricultural Business Government’s functions and activities influence agricultural businesses. This presentation identifies the various agencies and roles each plays in food, farming, imports, exports, rural business, rural communities and research. The government’s role as a tax collector is also detailed as well as the various laws, acts, bills and legislation pertaining to agricultural businesses.
Farm to Plate

Students will explore the concept of farm-to-table to understand the production process. Students will learn about the different food production practices and understand different facts about their food and how it is made. Students will also learn of many misconceptions in the food industry.
